Spring Lawn Care and Tips01-Sep-2024If you haven’t begun preparing your lawn for the warmer months, now is the time to start. Prepping your lawn now will make sure, come spring and summer, your grass will always be greener. 1. Do a good scan of your yard and remove any sticks. Rake up any leftover autumn leaves so that your lawn is receiving maximum sunlight and oxygen. 2. Aerating your lawn will reduce soil compaction and increase air circulation. A well aerated lawn will become more efficient in catching rain and irrigation water instead of it just running off. Once aerated use a good quality soil wetter, granular or liquid based, to really take advantage of the rain and your sprinklers. 3. If your lawn is suffering from any dead patches or is a bit sparse in some areas, this is a good time to apply a 5-10mm top dress, this is full of nutrients that will help re-establish your lawn. As always make sure you water in well and dont let it dry out on the warmer days as this may burn the lawn. 4. You’ll probably find that coming into the warmer months that your lawn may be a bit patchy and growing better in some spots than others. Until spring really starts to kick in, keep your cutting height high and begin evening the length out. Make sure that you don’t cut your lawn more than one third of its height, as this may expose your lawn to disease and the lingering weather extremes of winter. 5. Grooming, if you have a buffalo lawn you may notice that some runners are starting to come to the surface or "porpoise" out of the lawn this can be fixed with a simple groom using a vertimower or groomer. Fertilising your lawn in Spring Spring is an important time to fertilise, as your lawn breaks the winter dormancy. Your fertiliser application will assist the lawn to jump into growth as the weather warms up. Everybody has different soil types and lawn fertilisers will work differently! In sandy soil fertilisers will leach very quickly, hence more applications to do the job. In a heavy clay soil your lawn fertiliser will last longer because of moister retention and slower water movement. Just to point out – all lawn fertilisers work differently, some require heaps of water when applied and give surge growth to your lawn, others are controlled release and require minimal water and work evenly over a longer period |
